Striker Season Comes to a Close

07/19/2010, 12:00pm (CST)
By Jody Vitek

Saturday, July 17, became a long day for the Striker players and fans. Up early to be on the field by eight a.m. for their first playoff game against Faribault, the players stepped on the field well rested and strong. But Faribault did as well, coming out driven to win with hopes of moving on to the next round of the playoffs. In the heat and high humidity of the early morning hours, the defense and keeper held Faribault to a zero scoring game, while the mid-fielders and forwards worked the ball towards the net. Josh L. and Elliot F. scored the two goals Faribault allowed. Josh L. took a cleat to the side of his head and managed to play throughout the remainder of the game. The team missed Cole J. and Tom F. for the first game.

The second game of the playoffs were scheduled for later in the day, giving the players a few hours to rest, but allowed the weather turn on everyone. Strong storms were moving through the central part of the state and appeared as though they would skirt along the edge of where we were playing. Unfortunately, lightening appeared in the early evening skies and delayed the games in progress, but with little rain. The delay moved the Strikers game to a later time and when the time arrived to take to the turf, the players were ready.
The Striker players stepped on the field for game two of the playoffs against Waseca ready for a win. The humidity had dropped and breeze blew through the air. Both teams played a strong game moving the ball up and down the field, keeping the keepers busy in their respective nets. Waseca played hard enough to advance to the third round of the playoffs with a win. The final score 3 – 0. The rain held off until we were in our cars going home. Tom F. was missed on the field, out with an illness, and Cole J. was missed absent from the roster.
This parent, and fan, would like to congratulate all of the players on a great season. Each, and every one of the players, should be proud of the way they conducted themselves on and off the field, how they played as an individual, and how they came together to work as a team. It was a joy to watch each game and cheer for all of them on the sidelines. Thank you!

Taking on the Top Two Division Teams

Wednesday, July 7, under the big lights, the Strikers took on the number two-ranked Waseca team. The Strikers came out strong and held their ground all over the field. This was a team effort and it showed with communication, great passes, and playing the field filled with a desire to win. By half time, the score remained even at 0 – 0 and continued to stay that way up until the last 30 seconds of the game. The Strikers moved in, took aim and shot – goal, but taken away a short time later on a foul. Waseca moved in and the defense played hard to keep the ball away. Waseca maneuvered the ball skillfully and scored with less than thirty minutes left on the clock. The Strikers retaliated by moving in on Waseca’s net. Time ran out and the whistle blew. Final score 1 – 0 Waseca. Striker teammates didn’t hang their heads, but held them high as they kept Waseca from scoring up until the final minutes of the game. For the final home game of the season, us parents, and fans, on the sidelines were proud of our players and how they played. Go Strikers!

The following day, the Striker team took to the road and headed to the southwest corner of the state to Fairmont. Fairmont is the top ranked team in this division. The team arrived in the late afternoon to eat and stretch out from the road trip prior to the game. This reporter feels this was the right thing to do, as the Strikers came out strong in the first half and took the first goal. Taking Fairmont by surprised, they came back at us and received their first goal to tie the game. Before the end of the first half the Strikers got another goal and by halftime the Strikers were winning 2 – 1. In the second half Fairmont came back strong and the Strikers held them to only gaining two more goals due to a strong defense. Instead of Fairmont beating the Strikers in a shutout, as in the previous match, Fairmont won 4 – 2.
With the regular season now over, the Strikers prepare for the Division playoffs on Saturday, July 17 in Shakopee against Faribault. The team played in the Apple Valley, Valley Tune-up Festival, in which they played three scrimmage-style matches in a five-hour period with no scores recorded. The Striker coaches let the players choose the positions they wanted play, many playing in a new field roll making it exciting for the fans. The team had fun playing and working on their skills as a team. Good luck on Saturday, Strikers!

Resilient in Rochester

06/22/2010, 12:19pm (CST)

The Strikers hit the road Friday afternoon for the first of four games in the Rochester Invitational Soccer Tournament. The first and only game the team played on Friday was a disappointing loss. The weather cooperated by not raining on us. The team was back to an almost full roster, except missing were Cole J. and Nathan W. on and off the field Friday.

Saturday proved to be a much better day all around for the Striker team and fans. The sun was shining and the well-rested players. The first game of the day was against a U16 C3 team and the Strikers played strong enough to keep the final score at 2 - 0. The game was not as one sided as we thought it could have been, being we were playing an age level up. The Strikers defenders, mid-fielders, forwards and keeper were kept moving through this fast-paced game. The team went to lunch together and had a great time talking, laughing, and fueling up for their second and final game of the day. Missing for the day Saturday, Chris M., Cole J. and Nathan W.
The second game was a match up against the Kings of Kato, whom the Strikers have now played both league games against and won. The team stepped up and played a strong dominating game. With a lost jersey, Nick H. played keeper for the second half, with very little action coming his way.
Day three of the tournament, Father's Day, didn't start so nicely for coaches, dad's, players or fans. The weather decided to interfere by delivering a game delay when lightning struck more than once. After about an hour delay, the Strikers took to a wet field against another Rochester U16 C3 team. The Strikers played with an almost full roster with Nathan W. the only player missing. Andrew V. sat on the sidelines for most of the game after reinjuring his foot during the second game on Saturday. Although the team played well, pushing the ball forward and not letting Rochester dominate the field, their attempts at goal never found their way in. Rochester defeated the Strikers, but we all went home pleased with the outcome of the weekend.
